Garage door spring replacement

If you heard a loud bang from the garage and now the door won’t lift, a spring almost certainly broke. Don’t force it. Call us and we’ll replace it, usually the same day.

Bird Garage Door technicians replacing torsion springs above a sectional garage door

Springs carry the weight of your door, often 150 pounds or more, so the opener only has to guide it. They are wound under extreme tension and wear out with every cycle. Sooner or later every spring breaks.

Never try to adjust or replace a torsion spring yourself. The stored energy can cause serious injury. Our technicians use proper winding bars and procedures to release and set tension safely.

We replace both torsion springs (on the bar above the door) and extension springs (along the sides). On doors with two springs we recommend changing both at once, because the second is usually close behind. We install high-cycle springs rated for 25,000+ cycles and back them with a lifetime warranty on parts and labor.

What’s included

  • Correctly sized high-cycle springs (25,000+ cycles)
  • Replacement of both springs when recommended
  • Proper tension and door balance
  • Cable, drum and bearing inspection
  • Lubrication of all moving parts
  • Full safety test of the opener reverse
  • Lifetime warranty on parts and labor

Signs of a broken spring

  • A loud bang from the garage, like a gunshot
  • The door opens only a few inches or not at all
  • The door feels extremely heavy when lifted by hand
  • You can see a gap in the coils of the spring
  • Cables look loose or the door sits crooked

How we do it

  1. Measure

We measure the door and the old springs to size the replacement exactly.

  2. Release safely

With winding bars and the right procedure we release tension and remove the old springs.

  3. Install and tension

New springs go in and are wound to balance your specific door.

  4. Test

We cycle the door several times, fine-tune the balance and lubricate everything.

Common questions

  • Usually $150 to $350 depending on spring type and door size, with a lifetime warranty on parts and labor.

  • Don’t. Without the spring the full weight of the door is on the opener and cables, and it can drop suddenly. Leave it closed and call us.

  • On two-spring doors we recommend it. Both springs have the same number of cycles, so the second one usually fails soon after the first.
